Lynton and Barnstaple Railway

The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway was built to the gauge of 1ft 11½ins and was opened in 1898 and ran for 19½ miles between Barnstaple Town Station to the twin coastal resorts of Lynton and Lynmouth. It was absorbed by the Southern Railway in 1923 before closure in 1935. It left the standard gauge Ilfracombe line at Barnstaple Town Station with stations and halts at Snapper, Chelfham, Bratton, Blackmoor Gate, Parracombe, Woody Bay (formerly Wooda Bay), Caffyns, Lynton and Lynmouth, the terminus being approximately 900 feet above sea level.
